Renewable Energy, smaller photovoltaic systems with reduced costs: ENEA at work with the GOPV project |Articles |Ingenious

Focusing on advanced photovoltaic devices in silicon and perovskite "tandem" structures, the project aims to create high-yield photovoltaic modules with small dimensions. It focuses on sustainability, performance stability and safety of production processes, exploring innovative materials and alternatives to commonly used materials.

The GOPV project, coordinated by ENEA and financed by the Ministry for the Environment and Energy Security, has the ambitious objective of developing new materials for innovative and high-efficiency photovoltaic cells. The idea is to reduce the size of the systems, the costs and the environmental impact of photovoltaic technologies, facilitating technological transfer to industry. The universities of Naples "Federico II", Catania, Perugia, Rome Tor Vergata, the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) and the BeDimensional company actively participate in this initiative. Renewable Energy, smaller photovoltaic systems with reduced costs: ENEA at work with the GOPV project |Articles |Ingenious

The GOPV project focuses on making advanced photovoltaic devices by combining silicon and perovskites in “tandem” structures. These devices are designed to effectively absorb different spectral regions of light, allowing the creation of high-yield photovoltaic modules with small dimensions. The "tandem" approach is crucial to improve the overall efficiency of solar panels and promote sustainable solutions in the energy sector.

The project leverages the partners' considerable know-how accumulated in various projects at national and international level.Paola Delli Veneri, head of the Innovative Devices Laboratory at the ENEA Research Center in Portici, underlines that GOPV represents an opportunity to aggregate national expertise in the sector and promote knowledge of innovative, environmentally friendly materials produced using low-cost and safe processes.

GOPV project researchers will focus on solutions aimed at increasing the sustainability and stability of photovoltaic cell performance, together with the safety of production processes. In the case of perovskites, alternative chemical formulations, organic-inorganic, will be studied, which can also be produced through thermal evaporation technologies, making them scalable over larger areas. For silicon cells, the project will explore innovative materials for heterojunction cells, which are more transparent than commonly used silicon thin films.

The GOPV project will not limit itself to research on materials and devices, but will also identify new research infrastructures for further development of the results. In particular, new materials will be explored, including two-dimensional ones, which can represent valid alternatives to indium tin oxide (ITO), widely used in the electronics and energy sectors.
