L+B: Osram bins for better LED lighting consistency

By Steve Bush 14th March 2016

For better perceived colour consistency, Osram Opto Semi has announced LEDs binned to the CIE 2015 10° u‘v‘ colour definition. Led Dynamic Light Box

The CIE is the International Commission on Illumination (abbreviated from its French name Commission internationale de l’éclairage).

“In contrast to the established CIE 1931 2° color space, the recently developed CIE 2015 10° corresponds much better to the physiological perception of colour, hence 10° binning,” said Osram. “This subject is of particular interest for achieving uniform illumination from spotlights and downlights in which individual white CoB LEDs are primarily used.”

The binning is to be branded ‘TEN°‘, and will be used first in the third generation of Soleriq S 13 LEDs, available some time this month.

“Obviously these Soleriq LEDs comply with current industry standards and continue to be completely compatible with existing white groupings,” said Alexander Wilm, lightign expert at Osram. “TEN° binning is simply an additional property, and an extremely useful one.”

The intention is that it will be easier to avoid visible differences by picking LEDs from the new bins compared with using LEDs grouped to the CIE 1931 2°.

One reason for variation in perception is that the cells responsible for colour perception in our eyes are not evenly distributed, said the firm, which leads to different colour perceptions even with LEDs in 1 SDCM binning with conventional metrics. The issue has been known and researched for many decades, but results have not been applied in general lighting.
