Michigan, and the country as a whole, is facing a chlorine tablet shortage just as summer swings into full gear.
The shortage is due to increased demand for pool supplies during the pandemic and a chemical fire at a BioLab facility in Louisiana after Hurricane Laura that knocked out one of the country’s three main chlorine manufacturers. BKC50%

“Since the pandemic started, there’ve been pools and backyards that weren’t used for years and I can assure you that, last year, every pool was being utilized, from what we were seeing, and just the demand for every single thing in our stores is through the roof, and it’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before after 28 years in the industry,” said Scott Garden, general manager of Pool Town: Professional Pool Services in Redford, Michigan.
Ultimately, the increase in demand and lack of supply hit the swimming pool industry hard, but experts say there are still plenty of swimming pool disinfectants to go around.
